I think part of the problem is that the way a lot of people access the Internet has changed in the last five years. I'll use myself as an example and lets see if it mirrors your experience....
5 years ago my only access to the net was via my pc so when I sat down to check my emails I'd also jump onto drum world, spam a few smilie faces get plugged into a few threads that would pull me back through out the rest of the day.
Now With the advent of mobile Internet I very rarely sit down at my desk top as all my emails get pushed to my iPhone or iPad , I deal with them on the fly and while I'm at it vist the sites that either have an app with pushed thread notification or sites with the option to subscribe to threads youve posted in (notified with instant email notification)
It may sound lazy but with other sites actively grabbing your attention it's easy to forget about the sites that don't compete.
In my opinion if this site had a mobile version with pushed notifications or an iPhone/android app it would spring back to life........discuss?

And Rich, you might want to do what I do. I put an icon for Drum-World on the opening screen of my Droid phone. It reminds me to check in when I have a few spare minutes.
