My name is Al. I'm 57 and haven't played since my 20s. I'm a big-time music lover - rock and blues mostly. I've been into the blues since I was in high school and it's my favorite genre today, although have been into a lot of rock and I'm pretty omnivorous when it comes to music. I have a large collection of LPs, tapes and CDs. I have an ongoing project (which I'll never finish) converting my LPs to CDs.
I work in anti-poverty programs (no way to get rich), and just bought my first house a few years ago. Now I have a basement with room to put some drums. I intend to buy a set soon in the $700-$800 range + cymbals. I'm looking at Ludwig Accent CS Custom Elites, and Pearl Export Ex's. I don't have the expertise (or patience) to select a good used set.
I'll probably just be a hobbyist, although I may jam some with friends. We have a pretty active blues scene in Springfield, Illinois, near where I live. It's also good exercise to keep these old bones limber. But mostly I just love music and want to play. I was never really good when I was young, and I probably won't be good now, but I'll get better and I'll enjoy myself.
It's great to have stumbled across this community of drummers!
I don't like changing the reso on my bass drum. I think I've found the best combination (at least for me) of making heads last, simplicity, and a good sound.
I have a Gretsch logo resonant head, and an emad (I'll go with Gene and recommend the emad). When I got the kit, I had no blankets/pillows in it, and no hole. It sounded wonderful, but was far too loud live, and far too boomy mic'ed.
I put a small bed sheet in it (just enough to touch a little piece of either head) and it made it somewhat quiet, but still boomy.
I cut a hole in the front head, and with the blanket it was too dead now, and head lost some bottom end.
So finally, I took the blanket out... It sounds great. I have the same setup on my other bass drum as well (well, at least my other rock bass drum). Old, dead resonant head with a hole, an a fairly new/good shape batter head and no dampening. There's enough resonance to play live, but not so much that it's impossible to mic. Sounds great too.
I'd give it a try before buying a reso head. You haven't got anything to loose. Member since at least October 2005!
Oh, I was around LONG before the 100k thread started.
I remember the software version before this one. And the software version before the software version before this one.
And maybe even the one before that? I'm not sure... it all blends together.
Anyway I used Google, and I can't find my first post. But the oldest one I could find of mine was from November 2005. Which means I'm at five years, two months! Member since at least October 2005!
