when splashes get hit do the dent very easily

Depends on the splash and how hard you hit them!

Choose a decent sized splash for your style (Slipknot = at least 10") and you will be fine!

Too small and it will sound rubbish when really belted in a metal context!

But the small size doesn't seem to cope well - speaking in terms of the resulting sound! It sounds, well, wrong in the heavy music...but I find 10" gives you a good splash with a decent 'rock' voice!

This is only for rock/metal situations!

10" is almost a full crash in lighter settings!

Ok, he has 6", 8" and 10" AAX splashes, and a 12" HHX splash!

But, some of Incubus' stuff is quite laid back and mellow!

If you are Slipknot style, stay at 10" or above! If you think you have the musical situation go smaller!

I would start with a 10" and build from there!
