| Yup! We need more of that kind of stuff to help evaluate potential drum buys! Phil
Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users?

| This is very good. I'd like to see one of the better drum mags do a blind sound test on highend vs lowend drums equipped with the same heads and tuned by the same tech.

| Interesting clip.
I don't know if it proves anything (other than "what snare drum sounds good on this song"), but it's interesting to hear the different snare drums in the same context.
Something I've noticed: listening all the way from the beginning, when he transitions from the DW to the acrylic Pork Pie, the PP sounds horrible. If I pause it and then come back to it with fresh ears, starting right on the acrylic, I actually like the sound of it, especially when he goes back to the hi-hat...and if I rewind back to the DW after listening to the acrylic, now I don't like the DW as much. Same thing going from the aluminum Yammy to the Gadd - the sound of the previous drum influences how I hear the drum that's currently playing.
One thing that's tough about these sorts of shootouts is, how does one approach the head choices and tuning? Some drums sound better at different tunings, with different heads, versus other drums. Use all the same heads and tunings, and you might favor one drum more than another, versus dialing in each drum to its own potential (whatever "potential" is in the eye/ear of the beholder...which is a whole other can of worms.) Set each drum up (heads/tuning/etc.) to what you think is its optimum, and now you start comparing apples and oranges.
(I think this is why I have so many freakin' snare drums - I'm always finding an excuse not to make up my mind.)
I think the Yammy aluminum fits the song the best, but I wish he had hit the Gadd snare harder - I think he shortchanged it in this shootout by being so polite in the way he played it. | | Message posted 96 days ago | IP Logged |
