I had a gig with a band a few days ago that I hadn't played with in a long time. Usually I only use one floor tom but decided to break out two for this gig. So naturally I had to change the heads so they'd match.

I had a Coated G2 on my 14, and a coated Ambassador on my 16. So I put a used clear Emperor on the 14 and a used Clear G2 on the 16. While I had the batter heads off I tuned up the bottom heads which us much easier when apart, specifically with the really large drums. Cranked them up a few tones.

Put the heads on the toms, tuned them just high enough to make sure they had no wrinkles and soft spots. Tuned them completely by feel, not worrying about the pitch at all. And they sounded AMAZING. I have not heard my kit sound that good in a long time.

So the gig was in a small 100 seat-ish club. I mic'ed up the toms and kick drum, ran them through the PA with some bottom end boost and a hair of reverb. I wanted to be able to create a really good 'thump' on the floor toms in particular. And I totally did. The kick was huge, floor toms were a great 'exclamation point' at the end of fills.

I forgot how good my kit just sounds, without a lot of work...

Cool. One thought, tho:

You had a great drum sound through the PA? Buy the sound man a beverage of his choosing! Sound men get so much shit from drummers when the sound is bad, we should go the extra mile to thank/congratulate/appreciate them when the sound is GOOD - even if he's simply maintaining what is a good acoustic drum sound. Pleased

James... I was playing at the club where I'm the house sound guy. So I had someone else play my kit, I sound checked the band, and then I did the show.

The drums did sound great alone, just having mics on the floor toms was enough to give them some extra 'chunkiness' when I wanted a big thump.

Well, I'd also learned the entire set that afternoon. So it was probably average overall since I was 'inspired' as you say, by the kit, but also more than a little unprepared for the show.
