well i got the word last week that a band i was touring with earlier this year needed a fill in drummer for a few gigs again and so i jumped back on for a bit . we have a show that were playing at the pittsburgh 3 rivers regatta . we're on the main stage and we're opening for " hootie and the blowfish "  for anyone who doesn't know anyting about the piitsburgh 3 rivers regatta it is one of the biggest festivles in pennsylvania and has for the weekend of the event had in the past had a 100,000 people be there in total throughout the weekend .. when bands play it's right at the river front at (what's called the point) and has had thousands upon thousands of people there watching and partying .. i'm very stoked about this event and the chance to play it just figured i'd share this with you guys ...  anyone got any advice on playing bigger festivles such as this ???? i have a good bit of gig playing experience but non of this caliber of an audience ..

here's the link for info. about the show

Very cool, man. Big festivals are awesome to play because they usually have a killer huge PA with a professional sound crew. You'll likely have a big ass drum monitor right behind you so your drums will sound big and fat to you. Just relax and have a good time. You'll find out that big gigs like that are actually easier to play than a smaller club gig, because the monitor mix will be incredible, and you'll really enjoy playing under those conditions.

well done sam, sounds great. i've never played a big show like that but the smaller multi band events i have been involved with can either go great or be really hard work. it all depends on how experienced the stage crew are(shouldnt be a problem for you) and how large the ego's of the headline act are!(and how much time for sound check they leave you) and how far up the order your playing(equals how much time you get and in some cases how good a sound they give you!).

Just relax because of the sound issues it may be the best gig you'll ever play.... Enjoy it...

yeah, dont think about it. its totally different than playing in a bar. i played in front of about 8 thousand in may of last year. the usual stress that comes with a gig in a bar or somewhere like that isn't there. Its just pure energy, kinda like bungee jumping. lol. do or die!

Plus, the rush you will get will be better than drugs - all those poeple there LISTENING TO YOU!!!!

I gained a new apprechiation of of rock stars turn to heroin after playing a big gig - on stage you feel like a god, then you walk off and you are only a one handed welsh freak again (or is that just me )

hey guys thanks for the great advice... the show actually went very well from what the band felt like after the show, and all of the crowds opinion too.. it was a cool experience i actually haven't really been asked for my autograph alot before and it was overwelming down there i signed probably about 50 autographs for people (which was kinda a wild feeling)  also i got the chance to meet all the guys in hootie and the blowfish (check the following page for some neat pics http://www.freewebs.com/otacon28/the3riversregattashowpi.htm) they were all really nice guys , and they commented on our music as well ... i actually got to talk to jim sonefeld (the drummer for hootie) and gary greene ( the 2 nd. drummer on tour with hootie) and they were both actually checking my playing out while we did our set .. they both told me i did a good job keeping the rythym locked down throughout the set (wow that was kinda cool) it was a really good night, and one that will be remebered for years to come ..
