there are many scientific tests that conclude that music, when taught at an early age, actually stimulates more areas of the brain and improves performance in math and science. Even with this research, many music programs are being cut in the US.Lee
I think (hope) in time the trend will turn the other way. There are areas of the country where music programs are alive and well, and given proper recognition by school administrations. But even in those places, the band programs rely heavily on band parent organizations and lots of fund-raising activities in order to thrive, sometimes to just exsist.Lee
the quality of musical education in the uk is a funding issue. schools get no real money for instruments or training, its just not seen as a political priority, same goes for art, RE and physical education. prior to the teachers strikes in the 80's alot of teachers put in alot of extra hours(unpaid) to help kids in all these areas, then the government fucks about 'improving' things and all that good will was lost, never to return.Rich
We used to run these centers - all the other tutors were paid, but I wasn't because I was a student . But the parents used to pull their kids out so they could play football or rugby - because sport is important, music is for girls.
And the problems we had arranging concets - get parents to take an interest was like pulling teeth.Gareth
here the fucking problem is they put all the money into fucked up sports. They give dumbass jocks yet another reason not to care what happens in the real world as long as they think they can get rich and treat everyone badly.... What's funny though is that MOST high school football players never make it out of college and end up being drunk and dumb ditch diggers or if they do graduate they go into sales because they don't have to know anything... And most musicians become engineers and doctors..... so where should the money be put???? Steve
