learn to play double stroke rolls cleanly and with power then go from there. That will take you a couple of years of hard practice.

Get Haskel Harr book one and two. They go through all of the rudiments... If you don't even know what a paradiddle is you are not ready to "move up" yet.

aww i had to do that once, but its sucked cause i'm a girl Confused anyway, i would work on 64th note rolls and work up those chops. i know most peeps think bass drumin is just backbeats, but if you want a higher pitched bass, you actually deal with a shitload of chops. you def need to know what a paradiddle is, you play a lot of those, and double strokes too. its tough but if you work hard youll get it! Good Luck!

Dude! If you want to move up you gotta figure out what it is you're doing! No offense, but you're probably on cymbals for a reason--you don't know what a paradiddle is... here you are: RLRR LRLL. practice that. They're all right about double strokes. Here's the thing: PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Hit a pillow, get heavy sticks--find someone who can show you how to HOLD the sticks. If you really wanted to "move up" I would think that you'd been watching the basses VERY intently so that you would learn something. Do that. Focus on their technique and try to match it. Ask questions. and practice the answers. Find some rudiments online--try www.vicfirth.com. Well, good luck! And lemme also inform you--bass drum is a WHOLE LOT MORE than "keepin' the beat"! It's relying on 4 other people to "be there" and get their parts right so that your parts are right--and then poof! It's like one instrument--it's tough...

I got to agree with everyone dude, To be totally honest being a bass drum means having a good sense of timing becuase they all must act as one, plus you have to be cooperative and work as a team. I actually think Bass drum is the harder part of the line.

If your gonna be a bass drum, or any other "drum" for that matter you need to learn:

Technique- practice Proper stick position, and form.

Coordination- practice doubles, Oddbeats, and Triplets and learn to feel them, so that bass drum runs become smooth like butter.

Independence- practice playine something (eight notes) with one hand and (quarter notes) with the other, so you sharpen your concentration (works great with rim click-run combos, and flams.)

These three things (me and my friends have learned in the past.) combined make for a great bass drumline

hope it helps.
