| At the urging of menalaus, I thought I'd post to say "hello" and introduce myself. I'm primarily a mallet and steel pan player, but I've been getting back to drum set more and more over the past year. I've also become something of a snare drum hobbyist, building a few of my own (nothing on the scale of "turning pro," however), and exploring the options available in the world of snare drums: different dimensions, shell materials, snare wires, etc. I also teach a bit, cobbling together a meager living from teaching and gigging.
Look for me around the snare-drum-related threads.

|
I have much respect for steel pan players (especially good ones). That's no easy instrument to learn. I think it may seem easy to some to learn, but probably just because it's so cool and fun. I can't really play them at all, but had the opportunity to mess around on a couple once.
Do you tune your own pans?
Thanks for the kind words. I certainly don't claim to be among the really "good" steel pan players, but it's obviously something I aspire to. They're like any other instrument - they take some time to learn the basics (scales, arpeggios, etc.), but it's a very intuitive instrument (no weird fingerings, no embouchure to develop, etc.) - and the nice thing is, as long as you're working with a good pan, you can sound pretty good from day one!
In terms of tuning, no - I don't tune mine. I studied with the man who made my instruments (Cliff Alexis), and I watched him in his workshop for many hours when I was in graduate school. He was very generous with his information - he'd say (essentially), "This is what's wrong with this note, here's how I'm going to fix it." I'd watch, he'd do exactly what he said he was going to do, and I'd simply nod my head like an idiot. Never in a hundred years do I think I'll ever have the skill to do it myself - mainly because I don't have the patience to develop the skills!!! | | Message posted 2725 days ago | IP Logged |
