Since a couple of the guys here have been sharing their cymbal setups of late, I thought I'd join in. I'll post a couple of sound files, even though my time on each of them is all over the place (we're among friends here, right?)

(Note to self: don't try recording sound files after slamming down two cups of coffee...) Err...

I've been messing around with some different combinations of the cymbals I've already got, to see what works well together (and to see if I might be able to rationalize any more cymbal purchases). Wink I seem to be setting in on two jazz-oriented setups in particular.

One is all-Paiste:

13" Sig Dark Crisp hats
20" Traditionals medium light ride (2 rivets)
20" Sig Dark Dry ride (prototype)
20" Traditionals light flat ride (2 rivets)

The other has more of a Turkish flavor. The two main rides are an Istanbul Agop 22" '06LE, and a 22" Ibrahim Diril; I'll swap in different hi-hats and far right rides to fine-tune the setup to a particular gig.

14" A Zildjian New Beats
22" Agop '06LE (3 rivets)
22" Diril
20" Bettis Custom reverse china (2 rivets)

...and another variation building on the Agop/Diril pairing:

15" New Beats
22" Agop
22" Diril
20" Istanbul Agop Sultan

Great clips James.

I thought the third setup had a great "traditional" sound to it in particular.

very cool stuff.

I really need to get a zoom or something to record my setups.

NICE work, James. Cool Dude

I like them all, and can hear why you would use them in different situations.

For maximum stick definition and minimum wash, the flat top is king. Love the last one with the 15" hats, and rivetted ride/"cleaner" dark ride. F'n lovely!! Cool Dude

Thanks for checking the files out, guys.

I find it interesting how I've settled into two variations on the same theme: hi-hats, a riveted ride on the left, a non-riveted ride on the right, and "to be determined" on the far right. It wasn't a conscious decision, but it shook out that way.

Here's one more for ya: this is more of a general business setup, or the way I like to think of it, "a big band setup in search of a gig." Wink

14" New Beats
18" Bosphorus Traditional thin crash
20" pre-serial Paiste 602
20" A Zildjian swish (6 rivets)

(Ugh...that's why I didn't post this one right off the bat - that's some ham-fisted work on the fills...like hunting a mosquito with a bazooka.) Argh!

It's not as sexy as the other setups I posted, but it's like a nice pair of black shoes: something simple that will fit lots of situations. FWIW, that swish is also one of the options for the "to be determined" right hand cymbal in my jazz setups.

OK, what the hell...it has been a slow week, so I took some time, set up my bop kit, and made a few more sound files. Please forgive the multiple cringeworthy moments as far as time and chops are concerned... Argh! I want to die

14" New Beats
22" Agop '06LE (3 rivets)
22" Diril
20" A Zildjian pang (6 rivets)

I love that 20" pang on the far right - it's the cleanest sounding china-type cymbal I've ever heard, at times almost sounding like a flat ride.

And while the cymbals on the sound files are different from the ones pictured here, here's my little bop kit:
