Yet another Paiste prototype ride

Long story short, I had seen a used "Paiste Prototype" ride listed online at a nearby store, with no details other than "20 inch ride, Paiste Prototype." I stopped down today to check it out, and this little puppy followed me home. I really wasn't in the market for another ride cymbal - I've got PLENTY - but this one would've bothered me if I'd left it in the store - especially at the relatively low price they were asking.

I'm such a sucker for Paiste prototypes.

Here are a few rough sound files:

http://www.malletjazz.com/cymbals/new_proto/new_proto_01.mp3 - single strikes

http://www.malletjazz.com/cymbals/new_proto/new_proto_02.mp3 - cymbal alone

http://www.malletjazz.com/cymbals/new_proto/new_proto_03.mp3 - cymbal with kit

I've asked around a bit, and the consensus seems to be that this is something in the neighborhood of the Dark Energy or Traditionals line. It's kind of heavy, although I haven't had the chance to actually weigh it yet. It has a very interesting wash - it has a fair amount of sustain, but the lion's share of the sustain dies off relatively quickly. It's a nice mix of sustain (to keep that "cushion" going underneath jazz ride playing) and articulation. No matter how much I lay into it, the stick sound stays very prominent in the mix.

I'd love to get this thing on an organ trio gig... Pleased

I definitely hear what you're saying, Phil - I hemmed and hawed for a bit before bringing the cymbal up to the cashier. It's not that it has that "instant ooh" factor that some cymbals have, but for me it's a "Goldilocks" instrument - a great blend of different elements, not too much in one direction or the other. It's so easy for cymbals to go too far one way or the other - to be too washy, or to be dry to the point of being sterile and clinical.

This one has wash, but it gets out of the way. It's an interesting blend.

I'm still getting used to it, but I suspect this cymbal is going to fit in like a set of New Beat hi-hats, or an Acrolite - it may not be jaw-dropping on its own, but in context, it simply fits.

I'm up to 12, Duncan (not including an 18" A Zildjian crash that functions reasonably well as a light ride). I've come to the conclusion that there are some I don't want to sell, and the ones I do want to sell, nobody wants to buy - at least, for the prices I could get, it's not worth it for me to sell.

For instance, I supposed I could sell my 22" 2002 Power Ride, since I don't expect to use it very often, but it has a decent sized chunk cut out of the edge - which is how I got it for about $50 in the first place. I don't need $50 badly enough to warrant selling it.

Believe it or not, I have actually walked away from some ride cymbals for sale - there has been a very nice 22" Paiste Traditionals light ride for sale locally, but it doesn't offer anything I can't get from my 22" Agop. The ride shown in this thread, tho, is distinct enough from my other rides to warrant the purchase, IMO.

(Although, I could always buy the 22" Trad's and put some rivets in it...that'd make it different from the Agop! LOL) Devilish
