Yes, I worked on a friend's old Radio King. Had such a nice fat and warm resonant tone.

I played a vintage one as well. Aside from the tone and quality of the shell, shich by now is a matter of legend, the original rims are something to experience. A rim click could fill the room. Rim shots were awesome. The rims were not flanged, so there is a price in chewed up drum sticks.

Didn't their later models have that smooth inward flange on the batter hoops?

Could very well be, I only played one and it didn't have flanged hoops. I'm not sure that the later ones were solid shells either.

Some of the later ones were one single thin ply (I think) with thick reinforcing wood rings at the top and bottom. They aren't as "prized" as the older solids.

That sort of confirms my thought that the earlier ones were the prizes. I don't know much more about them.

I'm kind of curious about other peoples opinion of Noble and Cooley snares. Haven't used any recently, but some years ago I got to use a 14X4 solid maple on a number of occassions. It really knocked me out, and I haven't played a solid since that effected me the same way. I haven't seen any around lately, nor have I heard much spoken about them. Has anyone else played one? Recently? Any thoughts on it?

I've seen a few around still... I think they just stoped advertising as much now that people know who they are.

And yes the older radio kings were solid shells without flanged rims and are the most prized...
