The place where they play must pay!

They have cops checking places and if your bar has bands play covers they paid royalties.

If I wrote a song I'd like to get paid for it wouldn't you?

If I'm not mistaken, there's a commission here in Canada that tracks performance venues and knows what fraction of songs performed belong to which artists.

The venues pay annual fees to the commission based on how often they host performances, and the commission distributes the royalties to the artists.

At least that's how I understood it.

Yes, here where any copyrighted music is performed, or played in venues such as bars, a royalty fee is supposed to be paid to each of the three major music publishing organizations. BMI, ASCAP and i can't think of the other one...

I don't think it happens very much though, except for the the big popular places

Ascap hits bars and resturants in this area regularly ,never heard of BMI showing up.
