As I do from time to time, I changed my avatar to another drummer who I feel is/was amazing and perhaps a little overlooked. My hope is to create some conversation.

This time it has drawn no response, so I'm wondering if anyone recognized or even heard of him.

He was most known for his work with Ahmad Jahmal, and especially for his signature drum part on Ponciana. Imitated but never duplicated (including me). I've read that Jack DeJohnette has said that Fournier motivated him to play the drums.

Leaving the hi-hat off of the and of four is pure genius. Cool DudeCool DudeCool Dude

Vernell is one of those guys - he's not the first name people think of, but those who know of him, they KNOW how happening he is.

Kinda like...well, Ahmad Jamal, actually.

I never get tired of this clip:

That's not too much pressure is it - having Papa Jo Jones standing right behind you as you play? Err...

LOL - no joke! I read the comment about Jo Jones and thought someone in the band was making a face or something...then right there at the end, there he was. Damn.

His playing is so smooth and effortless.

I'm familiar with Vernell Fournier Gene, but I didn't recognize him in the small photo.

(I just thought you grew a beard.)

That's kind of what I thought, and I did grow a beard. But as old as I am, I'm not as old as that!

(And I also can't play like that).

I do enjoy the conversation these avatars stimulate.

Jon Christensen?

I remember hearing about him in "Stereo Reveiw" magazine in the late seventies and early eighties.

I also knew a german keyboard player in florida that had a ton of european jazz LPs of people that were household names over there. Most of them were never well known here. That's the only time I actually heard his work. The guy I knew LOVED his playing and would cuts of him on every time I saw him. (I guess he was hoping it would rub off.)Pleased
