Although it's wonderful to not have to trudge off to the salt mines, I know eventually I'll tire of this.

(Really, I will.)

I've been batting some business ideas around for the future.

My background is rental as you know, my hobby is music. Although a drum shop would be fun in some ways, I'm not interested in chaining myself to a retail establishment. I want a business that Myself and one employee could run.

The business I'm considering is backline rental. I have have some knowledge of amplifiers, PA, keyboards, and obviously drums. I'm definitely a gearhead and I could have some fun with this. It's something that I could stock up slowly before I officially got into business. I have good contacts in shops to do the purchasing and I am handy enough that I feel I could learn the repair end.

Pittsburgh has a decent amount of acts coming through town that need the service. I'm familiar with the competiton in place, I think there is an opening.

I have plenty going on right now, this is something that would be a couple of years off.

So, your thoughts?

I think it could be a plausible way to make some money.

I would think the key is establishing a relationship with a few local PA providers as acts will often contact them to arrange whatever their rider says they need.

Funny you mention this. I was actually contacted about a wek ago to provide a kit for a multi-band show (blues) on a Saturday. I'm mixing but they heard I was a drummer and thought they might as well get a house kit.

If I can make an extra hundred bucks for sound gigs that I'm doing just for showing up with a kit... Pleased

Of course, if you start a backline company, you will have to give in a buy Yamaha drums! Devilish

In my experience the Maple Custom Absolute is certainly the most rider asked for and accepted kit on the market. Probably second to DW collectors.

I mean DW is probably second, Yamaha first.

Yes, promoting it and developing contacts would be a major key.

You guys know how shy I am.

Yamaha, DW, Gretsch, Ludwig, Pearl, Tama, Sonor, Mapex, or whatever. It won't be a collection, it will be inventory.

Ah... 'inventory'!

I'll remember that so I can use it as an excuse to get more drum stuff once I'm married. DevilishDevilishDevilish

you talking about renting the high end stuff? Most large sound companies keep a fair amount of backline gear, including instruments, that they offer. But I could see where a more specialized approach to backline rentals could find a niche. Your business could offer far more variety and respond much faster to special requests.

Sounds like a good idea. May take a while to make money at it, but could be a lot of fun.

Yes Lee, I'm thinking of renting the higher end stuff.

On the drum side,

DW Collectors, DW Jazz, Yamaha Maple Custom Absolutes, Yamaha Recording Customs, Gretsch USA Customs, Pearl Masters, Ludwig Legacys, etc.

Pretty much the stuff other guys wouldn't carry. I'd go in the same direction with guitar amps, bass amps and keyboards.

Just buy all sets in the same color so you can mix and match. Like get all the different size toms but all in the same color.Pleased
