| I'm not dis'ing theory. Phil is playing blues and for him I don't think he should get over technical. If you want to master all music theory is a must. In pop, blues, punk theory is simplified. If you can't "get it" by just using your ears you'll just get farther away from the true sense of blues. Technically simple but hard to feel. It's more a space between the notes thing. | You guys are all making good points. I can read any drum notation, that's it for my theory knowledge.
Simply put, I'm giving the bass player my foot and the guitarist my hand(s). My playing (mostly) is feel-based and the technical aspects are time-based. Ground-breaking info, huh!
Lee said it in another thread and Phil says it again about the the space inside and how you use it.

| | The complete drummer??? One of the first things I learnt many years ago was to "listen" to the other musicians playing around you. A good drummer can take a band high but also take it down. The drummer is the "dynamics" in the band. One of the biggest compliments I got was from a bunch of old session players when they said "It's nice to play with a sympathetic drummer for a change". Being a Pipe Band drummer I was schooled in technically demanding rudiments and reading music. I hated reading music. If you've ever seen a Pipe Band drum score ...... the page is black with notation, but now I realise how many doors it opened for me. One thing is for sure .... You never stop learning. | | Message posted 67 days 8 hours ago | IP Logged |

| This is true. Some of us have been at this well over thirty years, and we never stop learning. -Mike of Baltimore We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

| Drum-World's Complete Drummer requirements:
1- Has a double pedal and plays very fast with hands and feet. Leave no space or some egotistical soloist or singer might chime in. Forget tempo because you may not get the same effect from your licks if the tempo isn't right for you. Nothing else matters. It's all about you.
2- PLAY AS LOUD AS YOU CAN!
3- Image is important. Bring the largest kit you can get your hands on. If you're not getting at least 50% of the stage find another band with better priorities.
4- Should have at the least a 20min. drum solo prepared.
5- If a drummer can't twirl his sticks he ain't worth nothing. Phil | | Message posted 65 days 9 hours ago | IP Logged |
