On the long way home from band practice, Deep Purple's Black Night came on the radio, with an interesting drum part from Ian Paice. I pondered about how a drummer develops that beat/fill that makes original music take off. Surely, he's a complete drummer!

So what is a complete drummer? Is there such a creature? If so, how does one become a complete drummer?

Hmmm. Interesting question Phil. First off, I think everyone on this forum strives to be a complete drummer in their own eyes and we each have our own view of what that entails and route we are taking to acheive it.

My personal definition is to keep great time, play appropriately for whatever song I'm playing, and to create a signature sound.

I think Ian Paice has it figured out for sure.

In my opinion a complete drummer needs enough exposure to different musical styles to cover whatevers needed for a given situation. We all have one style we're more proficient with, but unless you try the things you are uncomfortable with You can't grow as a drummer.

I think you guys have nailed it right there.

- Being able to play in ALL styles, even the ones you don't particularly like.
- Having a fair understand of rudimental playing and the technical details of the instrument.
- Understand enough music history to know how to play appropriately in a given style.
- Having at least a little music theory knowledge, so you can interact with other musicians.
- And finally, an understanding of how other instruments work, and what those players need and want in order to play successfully, so that you can help provide it. Hopefully they'll do the same for you.

This is true Rich.

I said it's what I strive for. I definitely didn't say I was "there".

It depends on the definition of what IS is. Pleased

Seriously, it depends on how you define "complete."

With no real definition, everyone's opinion is correct. Cool Dude

My opinion is both that of Duncan's and Rich's.

Lots of food for thought, guys!

Duncan, music theory? How do crash into that with only drum knowledge? I have a book on that subject, but reading it without the ability to play keys or guitar kinda leaves me flat after the first few pages. As for knowing other instruments, same dilemma!

Rich, I agree about being humble! My guitarist and I are on the same page with that. Believing that you're good because other people told you so is the beginning of the end as far as we're concerned. People can say what they want, we just don't buy into it for one second!

Mike, I'm with you, bro! Keeping time is job one.

Billy, you're too much! Smile
