| | Technique is great but remember to play musically. Buddy Rich although a master technician, would use each part of his body to accent or counterpoint instruments in his band. For example, while keeping time with the bass his foot would lock in to that while accenting the horn patterns with his left hand cymbal work, piano player with his hi hat foot and the soloist with his left hand all at the same time with perfect technique. I almost went home and sold my drums after a Buddy Rich concert in 1977. | | Message posted 316 days ago | IP Logged |

| I'll have to work on that first clip you posted, Mike, on finger technique. I have some endurance issues with thumb and index finger on my right hand. At least in part, I'm sure it's an age thing. But that looks like it would help. Al in Illinois - Member since February 4, 2007.
I just love to beat on stuff with sticks!

| Today I thought I'd put up a video showing heel and toe foot technique.

Updated on 3/30/2011 8:00:54 AM And it's good to see you on here again weazzor, it's been a while.
Every once in a while I've seen a drummer that was so good, I felt like giving up. Truth be told, I play first and foremost because I enjoy it. I'm always learning, but I realize that I'll never be Buddy, or Neil, or Vinny, or Stanton, or insert name here ________. I do try to improve my technique, I think of my self more as a "feel" oriented drummer.
This thread is to share some of the different things that I've come across.

Every day I'm posting a different you tube video on different subjects. I thought that today for grins I would post a clip of Mike Portnoy explaining how he plays (and counts) odd time signatures.

The explanation of how he counts and adds fills is useful for most styles of playing.
Updated on 4/4/2011 8:06:41 PM Here is another video on technique, this one is Peter Erskine.

| I studied technique, including Moeller and finger control with this great drummer/master technician. I loosened it up later with Ed Soph briefly, and then with Charlie Perry.

I can't imagine playing without these techniques. Joe and Sonny Igoe were/are great friends. A lot of very valuable technique exercises are available from Tommy Igoe, Sonny's son. Also, the stuff on the internet from Joe Morello is great to help you master it. Gene | | Message posted 310 days ago | IP Logged |
