I've practiced harder the past year than I have any time since my teens. I'm always looking for a technique or new pattern to add to my arsenal.

I'm going to use this thread to to share some of the things I've found on Youtube and am working on.

such as...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBuqszSM5mI&feature=related

I was hoping this would be a busy thread. Playing can be almost as important as gear.

Anyway, this is a guy that you should listen to and think about (IMHO). If guys like Weckl, Smith and Pert went to him after they were stars he just may have something to offer). Hard to find stuff, and it's somewhat abstract, but worth some thought.

Thanks Gene.

I'm hoping to keep this thread going with a few post per week to give us all things to work on.

Thanks for your help.

Steve Smith:

You may analyze his use of the left hand moeller technique... or his right hand 'gravity roll'. Or his double pedal technique...

Or maybe just say holy crap and enjoy it... that's what I did.

I'll stop now. I just like the idea of playing topics to go along with our shameless gear mongering threads!

I have a pattern I've been working on that I'd like to share Gene...

Flam on snare

one beat on the bass

one beat left hand on high tom

one beat right hand on floor tom

I repeat this pattern twice and finish with

one beat with the left hand on the sanre, one floor tom beat and a right handed cymbal crash together.

It is simple, but is sounding good as I bring it t speed.

I'm not familiar with it, I'll have to check it out.

So...

I'm mostly a matched grip player, or at least I have been.

I've been using the stick techniques that were in the first video I posted along with the ideas in the Joe Morello clip that Gene posted.

I'm having a real breakthrough although I'm developing callouses in new places which isn't much fun.
