| I saw Steve Winwood at Westbury last night. Absolutely fabulous! Great band, with a unique sound. Of note - No bass player... Replaced by Steve's left foot kicking bass pedals on the Hammond (or the sax player who doubled on organ when Winwood played guitar). i haven't seen him do that since the late 60's when Traffic was playing as a trio before the Blind Faith album and tour . He does it well, and watching a good organist do that has always amazed me. I love a great bass player, but this was a bit of a throwback sound and very enjoyable.
He played a lot of stuff from his new album, and it was great. Wonderful fresh versions of old Spencer Davis hits I'm a Man and Gimme Some Lovin'. Blind Faith, lots of Traffic, and of course hits from his solo years like Higher Love and Back in the High Life again... all with new arrangements and the fresh sound of this very special band. Fabulous drummer and percussionist, but I think I was in the 'facility' when he announced the band members. The drummer also had some timbales to his left that he incorporated into his playing both seamless and flawlessly, never breaking the continuity. The man had some very authentic afro-cubana chops.
I really can't overstate how great this show was. Winwood has been a force in Rock for over 40 years and it's easy to see why. "If You See The Chance Take It".... go see Steve Winwood if you can. Who knows how much longer he'll tour. Gene | | Message posted 171 days ago | IP Logged |
