| Two new ones we did last Saturday night in a Nashville TN studio. Rock/Metal

Basic drums, not a lot of flourishes, just enough to keep it interesting and let the other instuments and vocals shine. | | Message posted 533 days ago | IP Logged |

| Thanks Mike! I used my Ludwig re-issue Bonham kit, 1972 Slingerland C.O.B. 6.5 X 14 snare, and a mix of vintage Avedis and new Zildgians, and Paiste cymbals, 22", 20", 18" 16" 10" and 2- 14" hats. Gibraltar rack, DW 5000 pedal and DW DW 9500TB 2-Leg Hi-Hat Stand.
I like the rack because it's simple and easy to put up and keeps the area clear of 'too many legs' LOL.

Updated on 8/25/2010 9:38:19 AM This is my baby though. 1930 Slingerland 32" bass drum kit. I elongated the beater rod by welding an extension on it, bent so it doesn't know my shins. Only way to make it hit the center of the drum. When we play live with 2-3 other bands, this kit makes all others look like tinkertoys...lol. That's my 6th Century Scottish Family Crest on the head.

Updated on 8/25/2010 9:43:34 AM I use 12 cymbals with this kit. Balanced mix of Zildgian, Paiste, and Sabians.
Updated on 8/25/2010 9:45:53 AM I also employ a remote hi hat on the RH Gibraltar rack with 2-14" vintage Avedis's. | | Message posted 532 days ago | IP Logged |

| You know, I've never owned a 24" bass drum! lol I went from 22" to 26" to 28" (1918 Leedy I rebuilt with Ludwig Classsic lugs, T's,) and the 32" Slingerland.
I've played 24"'s and they have a great sound also, and you've given me food for thought. I have a an early 70's set of black Script Logo Rogers oversize toms, 14, 15, and 18 but no bass drum for the kit. I'm going to look for a Rogers 24" to match up with those. | | Message posted 531 days ago | IP Logged |

| Thanks Mike. I'm keeping my eye out on CL and EBay, and there's a used music store here in Brentwood TN about 5 miles from my house that I'll be popping into periodically called Nashville Music New and Used on Nolensville Pike. I want the Rogers Script Logo bass drum...but I suppose the square badge Rogers would do...in black.
I'm heading out to Forks Drum Closet in S Nashville later today to see what they have.
I'm also in the market for a larger rack tom for my Ludwigs. The one I have now is 9 X 13, but I'm thinking a 12 X 15 would make a nice addition. Ludwig Classic in clear Maple finish. I might have to order that new, but I'm looking around for one so let me know if you run across anything larger than the 9 X 13.
Thanks Mike!
Updated on 8/27/2010 8:39:02 AM I'm also making a smaller family crest logo for my 26" Ludwig for live gigs. I'll try it on the white head, but I'm leaning towards a black head with a mic hole. Probably with a Ludwig log at the top, but I'm not sure yet. | | Message posted 530 days ago | IP Logged |

| Oh, I know! I found most of my vintage Zildgians in pawn shops for $30-$40 each. 20" crash/rides and my 22" with no key-holing. There's just something about the sound of older Zildgians, even with the slight imperfections etc. They just sound so sweet!
That virgin 32" Slingerland I found for $100 in my travels, also at a pawn shop. It had one head, but both hoops and all hardware were there and those and the wrap are in perfect shape. I use 4 clamp-on spurs for it.
The 1918 28" Leedy I bought for $40 and although the white pearl was beyond salvage, I re-wrapped in curly maple veneer and filled in the single lug holes and re-drilled for standard Ludwig Classic lugs and T's. The amazing thing about this drum is that it's so light, and it sounds great.
I could go on and on about vintage drums, but I'll leave you those three examples of great finds. | | Message posted 527 days ago | IP Logged |
