Sidebar: the new Tour Customs sound pretty darn good for the money.

Yes indeed. They still aren't exactly "cheap" at over 1200 discounted price for a 5 piece w/ hardware.

They come in birch now too. The new tours are Chinese (or Taiwan) made. The old tours were made in Japan.

Nope, not cheap I wouldn't say. But certainly not expensive either. A fair intermediate level kit that I would certainly look into if I was looking in that market.

Except I'd probably buy some used Maple Custom Absolutes for about the same money.

Your kit is sharp, Lee!

Lee,

I used to like the old tour customs. Ed Soph played them for a while if I remember correctly. Very warm sounding drums. Especially nice for jazz.

On another note, I thought your main kit was RCs. Am I mistaken?

Yes my main kit is a RC.

I've had these TCs for nearly as long. The Tours were pretty popular for a short time, then Yamaha decided that they needed to give them more appeal to the rock n roll drummer, so they square-cut the tom sizes and called them "Rock Tour Customs." That didn't last too long.

The TCs are nice and warm, especially with coated heads. Tuned high, the toms get an almost "vintage" kind of warmth. Tuned low, they get a nice "growl" that Steve used to speak so lovingly of Pleased

"Moan" or "groan" might be more descriptive.
