One of the strands on the snares that came on my Reference snare got broken through my own carelessness, so I replaced them with some steel 24-strand Puresound Custom Pros. The old ones were 20 strand, and I presume they were also steel. They really sound nice. I also like the fact that I can swap them out with other Custom Pros by just removing a cotter pin from the mounting strap on either end. I also picked up the brass model, but I haven't tried them yet.

I expect to prefer the steel, because they say they're "quick and crisp," but we'll see. They describe the brass ones as "bright and resonant."

I just picked up a Puresound snare with that little pin release system (they were on sale really cheap). Haven't put it on a drum yet, but what a snazzy quick release system!

I wonder if it will work with other snares without making adjustments to the straps.

Other models and brands.

If I'm remembering the photos I've seen correctly...couldn't you do that with any snares that will accept straps, just using an r-clip from the hardware store?

I don't know. Has anyone tried it?

I have a few sets of Puresound wires. I like them all a lot. But when I first got them, they were choking my drum. I realized that I pushed the strap too close to the curve on the pin. So make sure its always centered correctly.

Having gotten in a month with the Custom Pro's, I really love the difference they have made. I'm sure part of it is the snares themselves, but I also think going from 20 strands to 24 has helped a lot. My current explanation is that with a 20-ply shell, the additional strands improved the balance between the sound of the drum itself and the snares. Whatever it is, I like the result.

Still haven't tried the brass snares.
