Cool input from all...

I've been trying to sing since '69. With a limited range, I sing a few leads, but mostly harmonies...mostly the high harmonies. Don't exactly know when I started getting stuck with the nut-stretching highs, but I do them.

To warm up, I put on some Boston or Steve Perry era Journey about two hours before a gig. Trying to keep up with Brad Delp on "Smokin'" or "More Than a Feeling...or Steve Perry on "Any Way You Want it" get my pipes in shape.

During the night, I usually limit myself to one beer per set. On nights when my throat feels scratchy, I'll have a shot of brandy standing by to sip on. If I'm realy suckin', I rely on my trusty spray bottle of Chloreseptic Tharoat Spray.

For all my efforts, my vocal style still sounds like "geese farts on a muggy day." The rest of the band can't stop me singin'...hell, I'm the drummer!!!

Damn. If you're keeping up with Brad Delp and Steve Perry, you must be able to really belt 'em out! Cool Dude

For singers the best thing to drink is cool water. No ice. It lubricates the vocal chords. Alcohol is a bad thing as is using Chloreseptic.

Well, that;s just the thing Lee, I sure DON"T sing as well as Brad or Steve...nowhere close...but that doesn't stop me from tryin'.

Singing and playing while drinking need to be monitored and as everything...done in moderation. I encourage drummer/singers to try a variety of things the read about here to see what works best for them.

Cool drinks or warm drinks, try them both (before you get into a live gig situation). The Chloriseptic is only for when I have a bad cold or real sore throat.

The thing about Chloriseptic is it numbs your vocal chords so you can sing with out it hurting physically, but in turn you damage them.. The same thing happens with alcohol, plus it dehydrates you.

Yeah, I remember reading about that before as one of the precautionary side effects.

New/younger guys better steer away from it. You cigarette smoking/drummer/singers might be okay with it. I 'm not a smoker , but I've been singing at the top of my lungs for over twenty years. Vocal chords are muscles (well, not literally) that need a regular workout like any other.

The red cinnamon spray works for me when I need it. But you're right, Ron, it's not for everyone.

I only use the red cinomy throat spray when my throat hurts... Because yes it WILL hurt worse in the morning after screeming into a mic all night.
