Hello I'm new here and currently having a set custom built. Thanks for all who've welcomed me and those who have or will help me with their opinions. I'd rather talk to real people than cheesy music shop salespeople.
Anyways, the shells will be:

DEPTH X DIAMETER
tom-toms
18"        14"
18"        15"
18"        16"
floor tom:
20"        18"
kick:
16"        26"

I play loud, thunderous, primal-style drumming and I like big, deep attack sounds. I'm most unsure about the kick, I've never heard one that's 26", but I think they don't need to be that deep to be loud as hell. My friend has one that's 32" deep and 18" wide but I he hasn't played it yet, but I'm tempted by that depth. Anyone got opinions or preferences on shell sizes? I've also never heard tom-tom shells that are 18" deep but I feel they'd resonate the sound I'm after, although I'll probably need a rack to hold them up.

One thing I can tell you - you going to have fun trying to set that up to playable.

I have (Dia x depth) 10x10, 12x10, 13x12, 16x16, 18x16 and 24x18. The hours of fun I had getting all the drums in the right positions.

I would say that in the sizes you are going for, your kit is going to be various sizes of bass drums...I would love to hear it (although it probably wouldn't be practicle in most musical situations).

yeah I figure the toms will be pretty high up above the kick, and I'm the type that likes them side by side, slanted, the first following immediately after the snare. Do you have to adjust the mallet on the kick-pedal a little higher than normal to hit the center of your 24" kick?

The beater is set as high as it will go...but that is my prefered position regardless of diameter - I used to have it the same on my 20" bass. Sounds better on the 24" though .

And with 18" deep drums, I wouldn't want to be the one trying to position them. Remember that the bass will be up higher than you will be used to. I am using a rack, and I have to set the frount bar as high as it will go to get over the bass!

Have you thought of using a lefty double pedal to move the bass off to one side? Obviously playing with your right foot on the slave.

no I haven't but that's a pretty interesting -yet good- idea. Lefty-pedal, huh? I've already got a PEARL double eliminator. Pearl also makes a rack that comes up pretty high, but the kick will probably be 16" deep, with 18" tom-tom shells it'll be a pain in the ass to get them up above the kick, but I believe! I really want to hear a 32" deep kick sometime.

I would be shocked if it made that much difference...it will ring though.

I would love to play with 'odd' sizes, but the kit would be so specalised that I would want to foot the expense.

I want to see pictures

If you already have a right handed pedal, you could do the same thing to the right - but that would leave you with only the single pedal available.

It is how drummers like Terry Bozzio can use three (or more) bass drums...loads of double pedals running all over the place!

I'll post pics but it won't be until later this August or even September, after I recieve the shells and start building it. Look for plenty more inquiry posts to come!

Wow big deep drums....  Just something from my past experiecences they will be super hard to tune.......  14,15,16 and then an 18 Wow...  Big drums are hard to tune anyway but the 18" depth will screw with it even worse...  And I have played a 26" bassdrum.  The Kit was a 70's Slingerland built for Lew Ross of Wet Willie.  (there were only 2 kits made).  Big sound hard to tune and the 1 tom he used had to be mounted off the bass drum.
