Anyone use these? As is often the case for me, I was playing a gig with provided equipment. The cymbals were from varied pedigrees, but overall very usable. The surprise out of the batch was a small AAX crash (14"). It was absolutely horrible, sounding like a tin toy cymbal. I never have an issue with Sabian despite choosing Zildjian for myself. So I was surprised by this 'introduction' to the AAX line. Interested in others experience with a wider variety of that line. Phil, 'splain me' if you can.

Gee I don't know what to tell ya.

I did have a 12"splash that wasn't so good but I've have a really nice 18"AAX Studio and 18"AAX Dark Crash. People are amazed at how good they sound, but they were picked out for me by Mr.Love but then again so was the splash.

Maybe they don't sound good in the smaller cymbals? Could be old or just beaten to death?

You can't win the all?

It's not my fault I wasn't there?

They were having a bad day?

It wasn't really a Sabian someone must have cleaned of the Paiste mark and wrote Sabian on it?

You've been listening to Zildjains for too long and forgot what a good cymbal should sound like?

I can go down to the shop here and try to check out some 14" crashes and maybe copy and post your comment on the Sabian site. Can you tell me if it was a Studio, Dark or X-Plosion Crash. A X-Plosion would be a medium thin, that could be some of it, a medium thin more on the medium side.

I have a couple of AAX crashs with the sweet one being the 15" Studio Crash.
The Chinese models are good too.

Aside from that I really don't like the rides or hats

I have a 19" aaxsplosion fast crash which I absolutely love... I found it discounted on rainbowguitars.com and haggled a guy I know there pretty well and got it for just over 200 like 205.95 or something...
So I was on the Sabian website and noticed there was a deal that for about a month they were giving away a 14" aaxplosion crash cymbal away for free...

So basically I hit the jackpot saved on my favorite ride/crash cymbal I have heard to date. It is my go to crash cymbal and now I use the 14" as an effects cymbal but I am still looking to get a 16" aax studio crash and I feel my musical triplet will be complete I feel that, the 16" aax stage meshes my 19 and 14 together and the tonal distance between the 19-16 and 16-14 is as equal as I can get...

So I don't know what happened, but I really love my AAX's

Also I've noticed AAX's really differ from the same exact cymbals... there were two 16" stage crashes one sounded horrible it was dark dry almost no sustain and sounded like paper. That same exact specs a 16" AAX stage same product number and everything the second one was warm long sustain and sounded pretty close to the 16" HHX evolution crash that was right next to it...

Unfortunately it seems that the medium-heavy cymbals in the AAX size sound gongish and just not smooth like my two cymbals

Try a different cymbal sometime it may just be THAT cymbal but I don't know because Mike has a complete set and many of us here seem to really like themDevilishDevilishDevilish

The 15" is a much better cymbal I find - fantastic at all volumes

I was just wondering. It seems like the reviews are somewhat hit and miss which surprises me considering the brand and their history of success.

I read this last night when Jackie and I got in late from a blues festival, I was too tired to chime in.

This morning I sat down behind the DWs and played, paying particular attention to the cymbal sounds.

For the last month I've been playing my AAXs every day. I have my other cymbal lines in cases at the ready, but I've been really enjoying these.

Currently the crashes are;

18" AAX X-plosion

19" AAX Studio

15" AAX X-plosion

18" AAX Dark

15" AXX Studio

The sizes and types vary, but work together very well. It's a large setup, and because of this there is room for unique cymbals that might not work as well if you were using them alone. I find the 18" dark and 18" X-plosion to be favorite targets, I use the two 15" crashes almost at splashes, I don't think I'd like either as a primary crash. I think it is mostly because of their size.

I also agree with Matt about Sabians being very individual. I've played different 18" Darks side by side and saw a fair amount of variance. The advantage of this variance is that you can get some great unique sounding cymbals. The downside is that there are some turkys out there. I applaud Sabian for still doing a good bit of the manufacuring progress by hand, it does make for unique instruments.

Zildjians used to vary widely. Now that they do the hammering by machine, I find that they are way more consistant. (Almost like Paistes in that regard.)

I'm not really sure where I fall in the hand-made versus machine made arguement. I see advantages in both camps.

I'm sorry you had a turkey of a cymbal Gene.

Mike I findd the 15" Studio can act as both a crash or splash depending on the volume.

True Luke. In the past couple of years I've moved more to larger crashes.

I've mostly used 15" and 16" crashs - that being said I've been hanging for an 17" or 18" for sometime.
My old Canadian made A. Zildjian 16" is very loud and full-bodied, its probably been my psuedo 18"Pleased
