So I'm staying with my brother over the holidays, and there's a big public skating rink just a couple blocks from here, so we've been getting up every morning and hitting the rink for some exercise and practice.

We were talking, and I'm wondering if this is a highly Canadian thing to do.

There are about 20 outdoor public rinks open in this city right now (just over 300,000 people), plus the regular arenas and indoor ice pads.

Around here I'm considered a pretty bad skater. I can get going pretty fast, stop figure and hockey styles, go backwards (albeit slowly) and I'm working on standing spins.

Do people elsewhere skate too, or is it just us that do it religiously as a whole, and relegated to athletes in other countries?

For some reason the POLL display isn't working. Here are the options I've tried to include three times now.

A. No, I've never even tried.
B. I've tried, but can't really skate.
C. I'm pretty comfortable on the ice.
D. I'm basically Elvis Stojko.

The only place to skate here is indoor rinks.Becoming proficient in skating is an expensive process.

Yeah, with all the doctor bills for broken bones.

There's a public outdoor rink in Springfield, but I've never tried to ice skate and it would probably be foolish to try at my age.

I'd say C for me, although it's been a while since I've been on skates. I was pretty good as a kid, at least by Pittsburgh standards.

We have 6 outdoor rinks here as well as indoor rinks that have been in business forever.

It's not as huge here as in Canada, but it's common to be a decent skater here.

C for me.... We have a lot of outdoor rinks in Minnesota...(well lots of indoor too).. Altough I never played organized hockey I can skate fairly well...

Heck when I was in high school I had a job as the "Rink Dink" at a local outdoor rink..

The job pretty much was tightening kids skates... telling people no hockey on the open skating rink and turning off the lights at 9:00 PM.

Okay, that's what I figured... less common as you get farther south.

I'm wondering about Europe mostly!
