Jake,

Lee is correct the coating mellows out the overtones but still lets everything breath.  I used 2ply's forever.... And tried everyones....  I was looking for a good low tone that didn't sound like my funk days when I put sheets under my heads....  This was the solution.  Plus I'm able to tune them all over the place with great results in any range....

If you want something with less overtones (in a single ply) try the Studio X heads..  I also use coated heads on those... My Mapex Venus kit that I play out uses them.....

Have any of you tried the blue hydraulics from Evans?

Yes...  Tried them years ago... I found they lacked any overtones and  they just felt wierd to me.
