I wasnt being rude - just asking who does it for the money.  I did alot of playing out when I was younger (36 now) and played wed-sat gigs all over Cleveland.  Definately made 200-300 a week with the shows....also did a wedding thing on the side and there made roughly 300 per wedding.  I also had a full time job and didnt do too bad there.  The money from playing was my play money...I looked at it as "man, I'm getting money to do something I'd normally be doing in my basement - no, not whackin my wand - but actually getting toasted and playin drums".  So, I never took the money seriously....you cant, cause there were times when the opportunity to play with someone or somewhere far outshined the fact that I was getting any cash at all.

So, who does it for a living - I'd like to hear what that is really like....

I have friends who it as a living, and the only way they can make ends meet is by teaching all day, and then playing every night.

It isn't fun for most of them anymore - having to take any gig offered takes the fun of playing what you want out of it

Same here. I have friends who play (or use to play) for a living. Most of them are generally happy with life, but boy do they work hard. The actual playing is the fun part, and only a small fraction of the work they have to do to maintain their busy schedules, constantly on the phone, trying to book gigs several months in advance. thestub is right, it would take the fun out of it for me. But some guys seem to love it.

The ideal is probably to get into a singed band on the up and up - then you get salaryed (if you are big enough) to be in the band, so you can play however you want.

But it tends to only be the bigger bands who are in this situation - everyone else is royalties only!

I play in a classic rock cover band and the most I have ever made is $195.00 for a 4 hr show.  I average about $75.00 per night.  We are booked almost every weekend so over the course of a year not too bad.  However, I am not ever going to get rich doing that, I do it because I love drums and playing in a band!

Testify brother

There is nothing better than being paid to have a night out doing what you love - especially new years eve at double time
