I'm a right hander, with a right hand setup.  I play closed typically, with my ride on the right. 

I'd love to learn open with my lefty slamming the hats to free up my right, there's so many patterns you can go for like that.  I will learn eventually.... but until then:

mere days ago I threw an old pair of closed hats on my right beside the ride so I could open my left hand to tom and cymbal work. 

so far so good, but it's no substitute for developing my left hand and playing traditionally open.  I will fix that, one of these days.
