I play closed but I am trying to play open.  It gives you a chance to do tom work with right hand while still riding the hats with left hand and vice versa with right on ride.

Thats about the only technicle advantage.

yeah, if you playin a hat with your left, you have the option of hitting anything else on your kit no matter where it is. in a standard set-up anyway. you can ride the hat in a simple groove beat, and throw a quarter note china over top of it. like carter beauford.

it wil also build up being ambidextrious, rudiments become easier to learn cause your not building you left, or right hand up.

for me though Joey, im left handed, so it doesnt help with ambidexterity much.

so its a right handed kit but with the china on my left too (rides on both sides but mainly ride with my left)

starting this way helped me very much in double bass. I got my right foot really quick, then once i started double bass, because im left handed, my left foot was already pretty dang good. So i had a good base to start with.

the only downside to my style is leading down the toms. I lead down going right but with my left hand, so i have to move a little quicker. I could change this if i was willing to build up my right hand, but NAH!
