First, try and get together with another player, and plan a couple tunes, so you can play something more familiar.
The other thing, is just lead no matter what. I've been going out to some jams to play guitar lately, and (being a drummer) there is nothing that bugs me more than when drummers don't cue the band.
Cueing the end of a tune is the drummers job (with the front man's guidance with respect to when in the song it should happen). Same goes for the start. Ask for a tempo, then count in the band.
One of the best things about being a drummer, is that what you play IS the beat... IS the time. If you count in the band, and someone isn't with you, THEY are wrong, not you.
Realizing that gave me a lot of performance confidence. Now I'll ask the front man to give me a tempo, count in, and GO!
And most of all... practice. Because there's no substitute. Member since at least October 2005!
I'm rethinking my approach. I need a chance to play a little in another setting until I'm more comfortable starting and ending songs. If I'm clumsy doing that it makes everyone look bad. I believe that there is another jam in a nearby town on Wednesday nights. Travel time might be a problem, but I intend to give it a try. It would probably be better if I could just play with some guys in a less public setting. I know that this is not rocket science, it's just a matter of a little practice. It's been a long time, and playing stuff I haven't played before with people I barely know isn't always easy at this point. But it's just beginning and ending. I'm comfortable doing the rest in public and I think my playing is just fine, not fancy, but competent.Al in Illinois - Member since February 4, 2007.
Strangely enough I did to it was an open band night at the area bar. The owner gives each band 20 minutes to play if they are liked they are allowed to stay. We played 45 minutes and asked to get off. Real bust to the spirits we wanted to get a feel for the stage since we have a gig in June for 250 people. He asked us back we had played together 5 times before that night so i was very happy with the results.
We have two more events planned before the June gig so I guess we our officially a band.
After not playing for 20+ years it has been interesting

real boost and we asked to get off the stage, I guess schooling would be good for me as well.
