This piece is originally from Chick Corea's Leprechaun Album with Steve Gadd. I always think of that album as Steve Gadd's coming out party. Check out this snippet of the tune covered with Vinnie Colaiuta - Tom Scott - Mike Landau - Jimmy Johnson - Larry Goldings. Vinnie makes it look easy.
That's great! Vinnie is one of the players that I really strive to model my technique after (although I'm not a traditional player). His motions are so clean and 'deliberate' but at the same time remain so relaxed and free.
And of course it sounds amazing. He stays so loose but has great attack and punch in his tone.

I'd been a "serious" drummer for a couple of years and attempting to play Yes, Rush, and Genesis. A friend of mine bought me "Leprechaun" for my birthday as he thought the drums were amazing. It was my first "real" jazz album.
I remember listening to it wide eyed for the first time as if it were yesterday. It came out in 1976, so I'm guessing that I got it for my 18th birthday in may of 1977.
Jeez, that was a long time ago.
Steve Gadd and later Jeff Porcaro changed my entire thought process as far as playing goes. I was no longer killing myself to figure out the latest fill. It became more about the groove. I figured out that the fills were mearly the topping and the right groove was the ice cream.
Thanks for reminding me of that Gene.
