Hi everyone, my name is Billie, and I just started playing drums in November of 2007. I played guitar (not very well) for many years, but I've always been interested in drumming (my first musician crush was Ringo Starr, and actually he still IS), it just never occurred to me to try it myself until recently. My husband's a musician and whenever we'd have friends over to jam, I was the one singing backup, and rapping in time on the table, or playing maracas.

During one of these sessions I started seriously thinking about playing the drums. Well, I didn't want to spend a lot of money, I mean, what if I were horrible, or hated it? I mentioned it to our friends that night and one of them said "You've got the personality of a drummer" and when I looked at my husband for clarification he said "Drummers are CRAZY." And I said, "Okay! That fits then!" and we all laughed. Anyway they encouraged me.

So a week or so later I was in Costco and saw The First Act Discovery 8-piece set, a child's drumset, for $100.

I saw felt like a little kid in a toy store, I immediately grabbed one and phoned my husband from the store and said "I'm looking at my Xmas present from you!"

It's small, I mean it's a CHILD'S starter drum set, but I can fit in it, easy, besides, like I said, it was only $100. If I hated it or really had no knack for it, then Rob had only wasted $100 and I can give it to some kid or something. Or, just keep it and make a fool of myself sometimes when I bang away on it.

Long story short, within the first week my husband had bought me regular adult sticks, and then within a couple of months an adult used ride/crash (Tama) and stand, and within another month I'd replaced the child's high-hat with an adult used one (Pearl), then last Thursday I bought myself a used dedicated Zildjian crash and stand.

He can play drums some so tried to show me a few things, and I also bought a video "The Ultimate Beginner Series" Drum Basics (I cannot afford in-person lessons with a teacher).

I get my real drumset next month, when I turn 50 (August 19) and I've picked out the Ludwig Accent 5-Piece (in black) and will replace the heads that come with it, with Remo Emperors, most likely (per recommendations I've read).

I don't know if I'll ever get any better than intermediate, if that, but I'll try! I really love drumming, and I guess it's never too late to try picking up a new instrument.

Here's my MySpace page, for anyone interested, for my new interest/hobby and yes that's a video of me drumming up top(well, trying to, and I didn't have a boom setup at the time so it was hard to sing too). It's for a contest I entered, the details are on there too. No, not a drumming contest, a singing one. But I thought it'd be fun to try and drum along too.

I came across this forum in a search for cleaning cymbals (I wanted my crash to be clean), and thought I'd join up here. I look forward to learning from everyone here, and contributing. I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!

Welcome to the site. The Ludwig accent is a good choice in the price range.I've been playing Ludwigs(also black) for 30 years.

Hi Billie,

Welcome to the group. It's a great place to learn and have fun even for us who have been doing it over thirty years.

Happy B-day and good luck with the new kit.
