I have a set of Avedis hats I bought in the local gun/pawn shop in 1980. I found them on a beat up set of stewart drums that had obviously been stored in a chicken house.
They wanted $50.00 for the kit. I offered $40.00 for the cymbals and a deal was struck.
The cymbals were heavily covered in green oxidation from being exposed to the elements, but they cleaned up great.
The bottom cymbal is ink marked "new beat highhat ". would anybody venture a guess as to the manufacture date of these hats. By the way they sound great.

If they were with Stewart drums, my guess is they were from the 70's. possibly the 60's, but i'm not sure ink logos were used on cymbals until 70's. New Beats are still made, of course. It is conceivable that they could have been purchased in the 80's or 90's and put with the old drum kit, then store in the chicken house for a few years.

I bought the cymbals in 1980. The ink is not a logo, just india ink style stencil on the inside of the bottom hat.

And I don't believe Zildjian started doing that until the early 70's. Anyway, New Beats are a standard of the professional cymbal line for decades, and perhaps the most versatile hi hats there are. A complete steal at $40.

Agreed. I have a new pair (2004) and an old pair (1973) and the ones you describe sound just like the old pair. Probably that vintage.

I've got a set of 14" New Beats that date to the 1970s. Here's the ink logo on the "inside" side of both cymbals:

GREAT hi-hats. I also recently picked up a set of 15" New Beats that I like even better, although the 14s are like a Supra or Acrolite - something that will work for a variety of musical styles and situations.

I agree with Gene - $40 for a set of New Beats in good condition is the dictionary definition of a "steal." Pleased

That would make sense - I got mine around '78 or '79, and IIRC they were brand new when I got them.
