yep, RC's are still made the same way with long lugs.

the toms are nicely deep and resonant, but the kicks are punchy more than deep. I don't really know why, but I THINK it's because of the long lug design. So my thinking is if you convert an RC floor which is nice and deep now, to a bass, it MAY lose the deepness and gain more punch.

My RC kick is 22X16 and I would guess an RC 22X18 would be deeper in pitch as well, but still not as deep as other same-sized basses. I could be wrong, but I've heard a couple of other guys who own RC's say the same thing.

I had a set of RC and finally sold it due to the lack of depth from the Bass Drum. I loved the toms. I'm not sure that the long lugs are the reason for the lack of depth. Steve Gadd has been using a Maple Custom bass drum with his Birch Custom toms lately. I speculate that the lack of depth of the Birch shell might be the reason (the lugs on the Birch Custom are not long, but I believe it's the same shell as the RC). I saw him recently using a 20x18 Maple Custom bass drum and the bottom was impressive.

I did recently play a set of RC that had Evans EMAD heads on the Bass. Tremendous improvement.

Surprise Rich... I love Yamaha too. The Absolute Customs with cast hoops have caught my ear (and eye).

aw Rich, you're so sweet. Pleased

How's that saying go..."Pearl - The best reason to play Yamaha" Devilish

I've heard other brands of birch bass drums that sounded like big, low and fat honkin cannons. Maybe the Yammie BD shells are too thick to let it resonate.

Another thought is they ARE named "Recording" customs, and they are (I'm guessing) probably easier to mic up and get a great sound BECAUSE they (the BD's) don't "boom" as much.

My kick unmic'd sounds good. It's very punchy, but not very low at all. BUT I have noticed it's VERY easy and forgiving to mic up live through a PA.

I played a 10/12/14/20x16 RC kit a little while back. I agree about the kick drum, and would bet it's because they're birch.

When I was drum shopping, I found a used Yamaha Absolute kit that had birch toms and a maple kick also. It was a very nice combination. I would happily play a Recording Customs kick drum - mine is just too big, loud, and low for most PA stuff. It's really deep, and I'm looking for more punch.

A smaller, deeper drumm would be the best bet for punch.

I would agree with Stacy on that an 18" kick 22" deep would really punch.

Yea, but would look awkward if the toms were the wrong sizes.

Well, not wrong sizes, just not corresponding sizes.
