I have a set of late 90's Peavey SP-2Gs that I love, unfortunately they are currently in storage four hundred miles away while we are working on our home up here. They are a little big for the mostly small acoustic gigs that I'm doing a lot of anyway, but I'm looking forward to getting them home.

So...

I packed up a pair of TSL-1s of similar vintage recently for $65 and have used them on some acoustic duo gigs with decent success. (Yes, the pair was $65!) I had a situation where I needed some pole mounted monitors and I pressed the TSL-1s into service. I was admittedly pushing them harder than I should have and one of them got a tad "smelly", but it didn't fail. (This was at the Hannah Ford clinic.)

I decided to replace the main drivers on the TSL-1s, I ordered a set of 10" Scorpions for them. (A little bit of overkill, I'd guess.) They arrived today and I installed them immediately...

Holy crap, they sound great. It's a little like installing a small block Chevy motor in a Vega, it does things you would not expect it to be able to. I installed some pole mounts on these as well last mont which have made them more convenient to use.

Has anyone else done a similar upgrade to little inexpensive speakers?

I've Got two Peavey column speakers that were originally equipped with four 12" speakers. I removed the top speaker, plugged the whole and re-cut it for a 100 watt double driven peavey horn. Although they are heavy and hard to transport they make up for it with a small footprint on stage.

That sound bretty cool Billy.

My brother has a set of 1980's vintage Peaveys with 12"s in them that he is thinking of selling.

They are the shallow cabinets. I can't help but wonder how they would sound with fresh, Scopians in them. He blew one of the speakers about ten years ago and put some generic speakers in both cabinets. I'm going to take a good look at them the next time I'm over his house.

The problem with the 4 X 12 SET-UP is the lack of high frequency.I had a blown voice coil in one of my speakers, rather than replace it with another 12" I installed the horn instead. It drasticaly improves the sound.

I've done something similar.

I used to mix on a PA with six JBL 4530s on the bottom (I called it the antiques roadshow).

The original drivers I believe were K120s, which are basically instrument amplifier speakers, rated to 200w.

We replaced them with 2225H drivers, which are 400w program drivers, and a few dB more efficient, plus go a lot lower (they're really LF PA drivers, not instrument speakers). It was like doubling up on subs all of a sudden.

And the 2225 is not even a current driver by any means.
