Yeah, the band at my school think they are all original and making up their own shit (they are just sum 41 rip offs) and i said well how are people gonna get pumped and shit to a song they dont even know.

My band does covers like offspring, Cranberries, etc. Just good songs people know and like, its what people wanna see not some half assed original.

The way to handle originals is to mix them into your regular cover material - not too much, only about one per set - and make sure you've rehearsed the crap out of it. People will accept it more that way.

I have no problem with people doing original stuff.. I think it is great. The unfortunate reality, at least where I live, is ther are only a dozen or so clubs that book bands that do originals.. and well over 100 that book bands that do covers.

Do I think that i get to use my creative expression playing "Mustang Sally" or "Brown-eyed Girl"..... NO.... But I do get to play often and get paid for doing something that I love to do.. So the decesion is simple for me.

What's cool about my current band is we choose covers that have popular appeal, yet are challenging and enjoyable for us to play. Therefore, we do not play "mustang sally" or "brown eyed girl" nor do we play anything by lynyrd skynyrd. There are a handful of tunes we do that cross the line as far as cheese goes, but for the most part we love what we play. And we work all the time and get paid very well. Our goal is to play material that most bands don't or can't do, but still keep it danceable and recognizable. We stay away from the over-played tunes you might hear every other band in the world play.
