Killing for money or gain is capital murder and is punishable by death or life without parole in the U.S.. Crimes of passion are generaly considered less severe,it all depends on wether or not premeditation can be proved beyond a resonable doubt.So yes killing for money is worse.

Yeah it seems it might be a little convenient that your girlfriends ex husband that was just murdered lost $50,000 the same day $50,000 appeared in your bank account.
