No offense, but saying Travis Barker is in the same leagues as people like Bozzio, Peart and Portney is downright ignorant.  People seeemed to be wowed by his "speed".  I know people in my drum corp who can fly around the kit a lot faster than he could.  Travis is a good punk drummer...far from a legend though.  It just bothers me that people can't keep their opinions about drummers to themselves.  If you like a certain drummer, fine, but do not tell people to screw themselves if they do not agree.  Especially when you compare him/her to pioneers in the field.  In regards to Travis, he is not the best drummer in modern rock.  The up and coming legend would have to be Danny Carey.  Some, dont like him..but they dont deny his talent.  But all should agreee...he is better than Travis freaking Barker.  In short...we're all drummers and all our opinions should be valued.  Nobody's is better than the others

then why did you call her ignorant for having an opinion YOU disagree with in your first sentence?

That last sentence contradicts your entire post...

True.

The problem is you have only heard Travis in the punk context - not famed for its ability to show great tallent! There is no denying his skills though.

But you are right - you can never claim anyone is the 'greatest ever' - only the 'greatest to me'. In which case Jason Bowld and Tom Meadows buries both Daney and Travis - but that is just my opinion

This is pretty poor... You have made the same mistake she did.

Now my second question is why does every DCI drummer I've ever known think that a good drummer is how fast you can play?  The best drummers in the WORLD are drummers who know how to use SPACE.....  They are not fast, they are not rudimentally proficient, the know what a pocket is and how to play in it and around it.  The compliment the other players in the band, they do not try to see who they can impress with their tricks and speed.  Now don't get me wrong I LOVE DCI and watch the finals every year but that's marching band not pop/rock/country/jazz band music.  It is a different type of drum sound your not supposed to take the massive corp sound and try to play it by yourself on the kit.

True. You should read some of Tom (Meadows) articles on phrasing, and playing musically.

I am off at the moment, I may have to type them up and post them

I think the key is to have the skill you need for tight and quick, and use that in tasteful ways...like all things - less is more.

Well...that is what I keep telling the good lady
