Some of you may think this is one of the stupider threads I've posted in the past three and a half years, but here goes anyway.

Sometimes when I'm playing my 58 Radio King or my old Leedys or even a vintage cymbal I can't help wonder...

-How many people have owned it before me?

-How many gigs has it seen?

-How many miles has it traveled?

-Who bought it in the first place and where?

-Why did they pick this particular drum or cymbal and did they have to save a long time to get it?

-Was it appreciated by someone else as much as it is by me?

-What kind of great music has been played on it?

This is either one of my most thought provoking threads, or I've just made people all over the world roll their eyes. (...again.)

I'm really curious of the group's thoughts.

I realize that some of you are playing drums that you bought new.

These and/or similar questions can be asked about guitars, cars, homes, bicycles, motorcycles or anything else that you've aquired used.

I wonder about some of my guitars especialy the ones that are older than me. Sometimes You can tell what kind of music that was played on a guitar from the fret wear pattern on the neck. I had a 1940 Silvertone archtop that had fret ware on the top three frets, that means gospel music.I still have a pitch pipe in its original box that came in the case with that guitar. It's marked $1.50.

My kit was new but most of my cymbals were used. Currently, they're not speaking to me. I hope they're not pissed.

I wonder what my kit went throughArgh!

But I do have a couple baseball gloves for the late 40's and one that dates back to 1937 (Found out through extensive research)

And I really wonder what other kids or people have played with it and what it cost when it was first bought.
Very interesting Mike!

If this band was a person, it would be president. If this band was visual art, it would be the main attraction at Louvre. If this band was a book, it would be holier than the bible.

Matt, your drums did survive a ride across the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Dennis and I.

;)

You are the fourth person to lay sticks to those drums. Dennis (obviously), myself and a friend of ours named Joe are the only people who ever played them before you. (And Joe only played them for a few minutes when Dennis first bought them.)

I think that is cool about the baseball gloves.

I'm sitting here behind our antique oak desk (which used to be in an appliance store) inside our hundred year old home writing this.

Hey Matt,
Glad your enjoying the DDrums. The most exciting history on your drum kit was the trip it took from my house in Pittsburgh to yours in Philly. Your kit is still waiting to make some history with you brother. By the way, Im really enjoying my Luddies, with a little help from you of coursePleased

Dennis

Since were getting into stuff other than drums, I have a 1945 ticket stub of a boxing match of my Dad who fought Fritzi Zivic for the world title in the Welter weight division. Sombody gave it to my dad 20 years or so ago. I wonder where and how that got around, but is cool to have. By the way, my dad lost the match by decision.

Billy,

That is a keen observation regarding the fretwear on your old Silvertone Archtop.

Al,

I'm sorry your cymbals don't want to talk. Maybe you could get them some new cymbal felts to break the ice with them. (So they know that you care...)

Forgot to mention that I do have two vowls of sand. One from the sands of Normandy beach, and the other from Iwo Jima. I picked them up while I was in the Marine Corps. I didnt physically go to those places, but was in charge of some of the folks who deployed there. Now theres some historyCool Dude

That ticket stub is special Dennis.

My 75 Slingerlands have a lot of history with me.

I think I saw them in the window of a local shop when they were new. (they have a sticker from that shop inside the bass drum.) I bought them in 1992 and played a few hundred gigs with then in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. They did gigs in small smokey clubs, on a stage of a big auditorium, outside on the main stage at an art show and on the bed of flatbed semi in blistering heat at a car cruise. They were protected by cases from snow and rain during many load-ins and load-outs. I had them with me living in three different states. They have been played with Zildjian "K"s, "A"s, Paiste Signatures and 2002s. I played them the night I had my first stroke. The picture of me sitting behind them is what first caught Jackie's eye. I love that kit.

Pleased
