Drum key, speed wrench, torque key, vice-grips, Leatherman???

What is your most common way of removing and tightening the tuning lugs on your kit?

Inquiring minds want to know......

First of all they are called Tension Rods. The lugs are the things that hold the threads for the tension rods.

Now for a complete description I will paste the same post that I've doen before....

I tune a little different than most since I combine 30 years of feel to my tuning process. But basically it's this.... Remove ALL heads.... Clean Bearing edges and rims with non alchoholic cleaner. Run a THIN coat of vasaline around the bearing edge. Place the resonant head and the rim on the shell then dip each tension rod into a little vasaline before starting it. Once all the Tension rods are in FINGER TIGHTEN them as tight as they can go. Now SEAT the head (with the palm of your hand in the middle of the head press hard). Using your durm key tighten the head to just get rid of the ripples and 1/4 turn more. Follow the same procedure on the batter head. Now adjust both heads (no more than 1/16 of a turn on each tension rod) independently until the drum "Groans" that is the optimum tuning for that drum. You will know it when you hear it.

I have a Yamaha "Power Key" which is basically an oversized drum key with a longer "T" handle I use to change heads. I have a regular drum key on my key ring that I use to tweek the tuning on my kit.
