So I have recently been looking for a flat, and have been really annoyed at how tons of adverts say "females only", "female tenants only" blah blah.

Anyway it's restricting and a bit insulting to me. At least I wont live with a bigot if the advert they post in public declares they don't want males. But still it's discrimination that I think society should be discouraging.

What do people think about this?

I emailed my local MP asking on his position which he replied:

"landlords are simply recognising that there are females looking for accommodation, who prefer to live in a single sex household, probably, simply for safety reasons".

I replied asking if it was ok for me to advertise black people only for safety reasons. He said no, it's completely different. His stance basically is, it's morally ok because the law says so (because apparently the law does say so)

Anyway it sucks imo.

Although it may be annoying it simplifies the search process since they tell You up front. When We are looking for prospective renters we are not allowed to be specific in advertising,so they fill out a questionare,provide references etc. You would be suprised how many people lie.

I think it's totally ridiculous and I've fought with landlords before.

I don't understand why it's not illegal. I don't see how it's any different than saying 'I want to live only with white people'.

Of course if someone said 'I want to live with muslims for cultural/personal reasons' I bet that would be seen as acceptable, but of course if I said 'I only want to live with atheists' I'd get immediately attacked.

It's the inherent bias in Western society and it offends me continuously.
