I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at Knott's Berry Farm in the 70s. A couple of months later he did a clinic in a local high school gymnasium.

Incredible.

I watched a few of his solos and he barely used his second floor tom...

If this band was a person, it would be president. If this band was visual art, it would be the main attraction at Louvre. If this band was a book, it would be holier than the bible.

Whether or not you appreciate big band playing, his technique and execution is in another world. When I was in my teens I didn't get the allure of a big band, but I knew when I saw Buddy that I was in the presence of greatness.

I later gained an appreciation for the music.

Big fan here too, although it wasnt Buddy that orignally inspired me to want to play. I was probably like eight years old when sitting down to watch tv with my dad. Low and behold, the Gene Krupa Story was on. Thats when I got hooked. Then came Ringo for me, then the great Buddy Rich. All truly set the tone for me. Like Mike said, I wasnt into big band stuff in my early years, but I know that cat (Buddy) could cook
