It is a hybrid of Gallic and Latin - created from the Roman ocupation. For a long time it was the primary toung of the UK (with English being the minority language). I have friends who speak Latin who can understand large chunks of Welsh.

We study a lot of Welsh history is school

Not really - Welsh has been largely unchanged since the Roman rule. They got right down to the West coast...a friend of Sadie has found some remains down there he wants to excavate (Sadie is an archaeologist).

By all accounts the Roman ocupation was a fairly good time for Wales - with the Welsh enjoying far greater freedoms under the Romans than any other conqueres - there was wide spread inter-marrying of the Romans and the Welsh.

Welsh also shares a surprising resemblance to Breton - probably due to the strong interaction of Latin and Galic on the western French coast.
