I've been looking at hand drums with interest lately, conga drums in particular.

(Suddenly a party broke out in the offices at the Latin Percussion company...)

I'm figuring on buying a single used good quality conga drum to learn the basics on. We'll see how far it goes after that.

Does anyone have some experience with this?

Heh...you can check out the conga aisles if you come to the clinic on Tuesday. ^_~

We got in a massive order of LP congas. And a handful of random Pearl. No used ones though, but lots of variety.

Oh, and a few of those Palladiums. ^_~

"Oh, and a few of those Palladiums."

I'll bet you do...

Let me see if I like hand drumming first, then anything is possible.

LP makes an entry level series called "cosmic percussion",they are made of asian oak with a stave construction.I have these myself and they are excellent for the money.

Hey Billy, interesting fact about those congas.

The 'Siam Oak' that they use, is actually wood from the Rubberwood tree. But saying its a Rubberwood conga would cause MASSIVE confusion. So they made up this term 'Siam Oak', which is a wood that doesn't actually exist. ^_^

"rebranding" wood has been going on for ages. There is no such thing as Korina or Brazilian Koa either.

Yup. I just love the idea of the confusion we'd have to deal with if they had called it Rubberwood congas.

I can just hear the ebay messages now.

"OMGZZZOR RUBBEBER CONGAAA?? WAT IS?"

And sadly...thats not an exaggeration. Devilish

It's made in the US, it's fiberglass and it has chrome trim.

It's cort of like the vintage Corvette of conga drums.

Oh, and it's cheap if this doesn't work out...

Pleased

I owned a pair of these briefly a little while ago. (Last year?) I got them at a local shop. I returned them because I was going to get a bigger pair, but I never got around to it. They're a lot of fun. I've still go an instructional DVD. Maybe someday.

I read that it's easier for a beginner to coax tones out of fiberglass.

I'd go for a pair if I were you.
