| I travel a good bit and have for a long time. In my travels I make it a point to stick my head into music stores and drums shops wherever I go.
I root for the small local business-person and like to deal with them anytime I can. I have bought from Guitar Center and the like on occasion, but very rarely. I just don't feel their service or prices are good enough.
This is a good thing. It has allowed some small shops to do well by providing good service and good prices and compete with the big box stores.
Some of the better independent small shops I've come across are Dale's in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and Sticks and Skins in Champaign Illinois. Nice people staff both places, it makes a differnce.
Of course Washinton Music center treats me really well with crazy prices, I think I pretty much have an employee discount there.
And... although I've yet to visit the shop in person, I have gotten good service and prices from Katie and the guys at Greenbrier.
Now the not so good...
I visited the drum Pad outside of Chicago and although the prices seemed competitive, the crew seemed to not care whether or not you bought from them or not. I was only there once, maybe they had a bad day.
Waddell's is a shop outside of Pittsburgh, the owner is a nice guy, but the prices are not in line with reality. They have a set of Ludwigs similar to what Dennis ordered from Washington Music. It had one less tom and cost $400 more. They now concentrate more on lessons and with their pricing, they have to.
There is a drum shop in Richmond, I think it's call The Drum Stop. They do inernet business and lessons. The prices are high. The owner is nice and knowledable, but his staff seems lackluster at best.
Lastly, there is Drum World in Castle Shannon Pennsylvania, about a mile from my house. It is a "Five Star" shop, much like Dale's and Skin's and Tins. I bought my 75 Slingerlands from them used nearly twenty years ago. The is young guy named Brian there that is good to deal with, the rest of the staff including the owner are rude on their best day. It goes down hill from there. They are looking for help. I thought about it for a minute or two and realized that I don't want to be around these people. It's really a shame because I have a major drum shop a mile from the house, but I'll drive 300 miles one way just to deal with someone else.
These are my personal views, your milage may vary...
