As many of you know, Daniel Glass came to Pittsburgh a months ago and put on a clinic. Besides the fact that his clinic was great, I found him to be a great and classy guy. We've kept in touch and he called me a few weeks ago to tell me of this project. Although I'm retired and on limited funds these days, I am going to contribute what I can to help.

This is an open letter he recently sent out, I thought that I'd share it.

Dear Friend and Fellow Drummer,

I hope you're doing fabulously well. I'm writing today to ask for two minutes of your time, and for your support.

Many of you know that in addition to being a performer, I've spent the last dozen years or so developing a second career as a music historian and educator. I've interviewed more than 50 music legends, written three books about classic style of drumming, and regularly perform workshops and clinics all over the world.

I'm now planning to put all that research together into a large scale DVD called The Century Project, which will take the viewer on a 100-year musical journey from 1865 (end of the Civil War) to 1965 (the arrival of the Beatles to America's shores). The idea here is to show just how pivotal the drum set has been in the evolution of America and our culture as a whole.

In addition to telling this very compelling story, The Century Project will be the first ever large-scale DVD to incorporate vintage drums. To that end, I will utilize a variety of period era kits in the performance segments, and there will be extra features dedicated to talking about shell construction, bearing edges, mounting hardware, and how all these elements fit into the big picture.

For the last two years, I've been actively working with Drum Channel to bring The Century Project to life. Unfortunately, the industry has been devastated by YouTube, piracy and a host of other ills, which means I have to raise $12,000 myself - just over half the funds - if I want the DVD to see the light of day. Toward that end, I'm working with an innovative crowd-funding platform called Kickstarter, which utilizes "incentives," sort of like a PBS pledge drive.

To find out more about The Century Project and see our incredible list of incentives, please check out the video at the following link:

With 20 days left in the campaign, I'm a little more than 1/2 way to my goal of $12,000. However, Kickstarter works in such a way that if I don't reach my full goal by the target date (November 22nd), the project doesn't fund, everyone gets their money back, and I walk away empty handed.

I have never reached out to friends and family like this to appeal for money, and I would not do so if this project were not so important. Easily half of all the drumming legends I interviewed have now passed away, and as we get further away from the 20th Century, the chances that their stories and musical contributions will be lost forever are becoming more of a reality all the time. In other words, the time to get this information out is now!

If you've ever read one of my books, been to one of my clinics, or seen a performance with acts like Royal Crown Revue or Brian Setzer, you know the kind of integrity that I put into my work as a performer, historian and educator. By backing The Century Project, you have the chance not only to invest in the continuation of that work, but you can play a role in creating an important record of our musical history.

I really hope I can count on your financial support to help us reach our goal, and bring The Century Project to life. If you've already donated, please take the opportunity to pass the link along to others: share it on Facebook, Tweet it, and otherwise spread the word to those who might want to support.

Again, all the information about The Century Project can be found at this link:

Thanks so much for your time,

Daniel Glass
