Just curious, in an unscientific kind of way! This thought crossed my mind during practice yesterday (yes, I was daydreaming while playing, mark me down for #4!)

I make mistakes. I don't think anyone would say they don't.

(okay, two people said they don't...)

The important part is that you can either recover from them quickly, or turn them around and make it sound like you did it on purpose.

I did.

i guess it really depends on the song, who thinks you messed up, who can tell you messed up...etc.

I can say for the majority of normal stuff that i play...i dont mess up. every lick is where i want it. there aren't many people in the world that can listen to another drummer play a song and say "oh, that wasn't in the recording, it was the other roll". I dont aim to please people like that anyway, so it doesn't matter.

If i'm playing more complex stuff, sure, every once in a while i'll let one slip....but the first thing any drummer should learn is how to screw up. I learned early. Now most of the time when I play i get a comment from another drummer or someone that I never miss a lick when in my own mind i'm thinking "I could have done that better". Its not in a cocky attitude sort of way, its just something that happens.

I guess the best way to make sure you dont mess up in front of other people is to not play songs you are comfortable with in front of people. Polish them in your basement until they are flawless, and then take it out somewhere.

I can say that i would never take a Michel Camilo song out to a bar and attempt it, cause right now its murdering me...but in a couple of weeks....who knows.

Pleased

"I did."

couldnt have put it better.

unless your in a dream theatre/rush tribute band most drum parts are as hard as you decide to make them. personally im no great drum master, i play covers mostly these days so no crazy time sigs to worry about...just 4 on the floor...which when you get to a certain stage you stop thinking and start having fun with.

Your right it does depend on the song

exactly my point Rich....now a days...i am happier playing 4 on the floor then anything else. I'd love to write some awesome drum solo to win some guitar center drum off, but it just doesnt interest me anymore getting up there and beating off to myself for 2 minutes so i can win some cymbals.
