Well, I just got back from voting in what has probably been the most bizarre federal election since confederation. I can honestly say that I have absolutely no idea what the result is going to be.

Our left wing (quasi-socialist) party has gone from a dismal 14%-ish showing for the last 20 years or so, to supplanting the former opposition, and coming within three points of the Conservative government.

A lot of it has to do with the youth vote. There have been all sorts of 'get out and vote' rallies, etc. like I've never seen before trying to encourage young voters and get turnout rates up. Whether or not that will translate into seats, I don't know.

Polls don't close until 9:30, and we're barred from seeing election results in the eastern ridings until our polls close, so I'm sitting around waiting for the next 7 hours!!!!!

Either way, it's very exciting.

AWFUL result.

The far left party passed the traditional official opposition, but the vote split between the two left-leaning parties has given up a lot of seats to the Conservatives without them actually getting that many votes.

Right now they have a solid majority, but only 40% of the vote.

And Stephen Harper scares the living crap out of me. I have a feeling I'm going to have to start writing letters to the government day after day reminding him that 60% of people don't want corporate tax cuts and new fighter jets.

Either way it's an historic election. We haven't had a right wing majority in over two decades. And we have a new opposition completely. The Liberal party was basically destroyed. The Bloc Quebecois (separatist party) has lost almost 50 seats in the house, and is down to two.

Yep...

And with every other part running in a platform of higher corporate taxes, over 60% of people voted for more taxes and more social services.

I have a feeling Harper is not going to recognize that at all. He's already said he will pass the budget that had his government shot down in the first place.
